Although we experience our bodies as solid, they are in fact more like fires that are constantly being consumed and renewed. For instance, we grow a new stomach linings every five days, our skin is new every five weeks. Each year, fully 98% of the total number of atoms in our bodies is replaced. Ayurveda gives us the tools to intervene at the quantum level of our organism where we are being created anew each day. Freedom from sickness depends on contacting our own subtle awareness bringing it into balance and then extending that balance to the body.
AYURVEDA is widely considered to be the oldest - post diluvian - healing science. It is a Sanskrit word which means ‘The Science of Life.’ Ayurvedic knowledge originated in India more than 5,000 years ago and is often called the ‘Mother of all Healing’. It stems from the ancient Vedic culture and was taught for many thousands of years in an oral tradition from accomplished masters to their disciples.
Ayurveda places great emphasis on prevention and encourages maintaining health by paying close attention to balance in one's life through right thinking, diet, lifestyle and herbs. Knowledge of Ayurveda enables one to understand how to create balance of body, mind and consciousness according to our individual constitution and how to make lifestyle changes to bring about and maintain this balance.
Just as everyone has an individual thumb print, each person has a particular pattern of energy - an individual combination of physical, mental and emotional characteristics - which is his or her constitution. Many factors, both internal and external, act upon us to disturb this balance and are reflected as a change in one's constitution from the balanced state. Examples of some of these emotional and physical stresses are: the emotional state, diet and food choices, seasons and weather, physical trauma, work and family relationships. Once these factors that can cause imbalance are understood, one can take appropriate actions to nullify or minimize their effects or eliminate the causes, and re-establish one's original constitution.
Balance is the natural order; imbalance is disorder. Health is order; disease is disorder. Within the body there is a constant interaction between order and disorder. (comparable to the battle of pathogens and anti pathogens in traditional Chinese medicine) Once one understands the nature and structure of disorder, one can re-establish order.
Ayurveda identifies three basic types of energy or functional principles that are present in everybody and everything: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Energy is required to create movement so that fluids and nutrients get to the cells, enabling the body to function. Energy is also required to metabolize the nutrients in the cells, and is called for to lubricate and maintain cellular structure. Vata is the energy of movement, Pitta the energy of digestion or metabolism and Kapha the energy of lubrication and structure. All people have Vata, Pitta and Kapha, but one is usually primary, one secondary and the third least prominent.
The cause of disease in Ayurveda is viewed as the lack of proper cellular function because of an excess or deficiency of Vata, Pitta or Kapha and/or the presence of toxins. In Ayurveda, body, mind and consciousness work together in maintaining balance. They are simply viewed as different facets of one's being.
According to Ayurvedic philosophy the entire cosmos is an interplay of the energies of the five great elements: Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. Vata, Pitta and Kapha are combinations and permutations of these five elements that manifest as patterns present in all creation.
THE THREE DOSHAS:
VATA represents the principle of movement. Vata may be translated as the bodily air principle. However, the element of Air in the external atmosphere is not the same as the air in the body. Bodily air/Vata, may be characterized as the subtle energy that governs biological movement. This biological principle of movement engenders all subtle changes in the metabolism. Vata is formed from the two elements Ether and Air. Vata governs breathing, blinking of the eyelids, movements in the muscles and tissues, pulsations in the heart, all expansion and contraction, the movements of cytoplasm and the cell membranes, and the movement of the single impulses in nerve cells. Vata also governs such feelings and emotions as freshness, nervousness, fear, anxiety, pain, tremors and spasms. The large intestine, pelvic cavity, bones, skin, ears and thighs are the seats of Vata. If the body develops an excess of Vata, it will accumulate in these areas.
PITTA is translated as fire. The fire of a candle or the fire in a fireplace may be seen, however, the bodily heat-energy, the Pitta Dosha, which manifests as metabolism is not visible in this way. Pitta governs digestion, absorption, assimilation, nutrition, metabolism, body temperature, skin coloration, the luster of the eyes: and also intelligence and understanding. Psychologically, Pitta arouses anger, hate and jealousy. The small intestine, stomach, sweat glands, blood, fat, eyes and skin are the seats of Pitta. Pitta is formed from the two elements Fire and Water.
KAPHA is formed from the two elements, Earth and Water. Kapha cements the elements in the body providing the material for physical structure. This Dosha maintains body resistance. Water is the main constituent of Kapha, and this bodily water is responsible for biological strength and natural tissue resistance in the body. Kapha lubricates the joints; provides moisture to the skin; helps to heal wounds, fills the spaces in the body: gives biological strength. vigor and stability; supports memory retention; gives energy to the heart and lungs and maintains immunity. Kapha is present in the chest, throat, head, sinuses, nose, mouth, stomach. joints, cytoplasm, plasma and liquid secretions of the body such as mucus. Psychologically, Kapha is responsible for emotions of attachment, greed and long-standing envy; it is also expressed in tendencies toward calmness, forgiveness and love. The chest is the seat of Kapha.
